Hoi Allemaal - Hi all

This Forum is created to keep it more easy, more manageable and reduce the mail , we will use this Forum to place and discuss special tasks, or like now the translation project where we are working on. Now you all can just respond here and if there are more members who want to help , all help is appreciated ! Of course if you have questions you can also add them here.

See : Current Special Tasks, projects , for everything we are currently working on , and where you might be able to help , if you like to help with something , post a comment here below in the scroll box and let us know what it is that you may want to help us with , copy and paste the four tildes (~~~~) below your message, this ensures, after you saved, your name, time and date are visible , so we will know who wants to help , and than we can respond and make some agreements.

Groeten,

Astrid Spaargaren

My Dutch is limited as I came to Canada when I was two years old and am now 71. I have created a family tree on my mother's side going back to Gerrit Ploos van Amstel, 26 Mar 1667 - 01 Aug 1741 born in Naarden, Nord Holland, Netherlands. All my information for the Ploos van Amstel family tree to Gerrit comes from a book called De Dolerenden van 1886 en hun Nageslacht published in 1990 by Uitgeversmaatschappij J.H. Kok. It is a genealogical record of some dissidents in the Dutch Reformed Church in 1886. My Great Great Grandfather, J.J.A. Ploos van Amstel was one of these dissidents. There are family records for a number of other families as well, but I have only entered my mother's family tree here at WikiTree.

Among the items I inherited from my mother is a short book called Een Wandel Met God by Dr. L.H. Wagenaar published in 1895 which is a biography of J.J.A. Ploos van Amstel. This little book traces the family tree back to 1105. However, it is in a footnote in Dutch and using Google Translate does not give me a clear enough understanding. There are some ambiguities in the generation preceding Gerrit. The family tree goes back to 1105 before the surname was just van Amstel. Ploos van Amstel seems to date from the 15th century.

I would like someone to give me a proper translation of the footnote if anyone can do that. I also don't know if this is an acceptable source. Please advise. Thanks.

Hi Marco!

How nice to meet you. Welcome at the Dutch Roots or DRP. :)

That is an interesting family you have. Wow! And I would like to learn more about the Doleantie. I do not know the De Dolerenden en hun Nageslacht but I would like to take a closer look soon, also at the Ploos's.

But it is late here at The Netherlands and I have to work next days but I am sure I will have some time tomorrow night to take a closer look at your contributions. We are all just volunteers. :)

Do not worry, as "non-Dutch" it is not so easy to find "real reliable" sources (like original birth- marriage- and/or deathcertificates or notorial deeds) if you do not know where to look for them. Even I had problems to find them as I started here. Besides there is a language barrier. And as we say, especially on old profiles, any source is better than no source.

But you are young enough to learn how to read those Dutch docs I am sure!

TTYS Marco!

Kind regards from dark The Netherlands.

But I like to help you how to find those reliable sources if you like. Just hope you have a little patience and I will try to mail you tomorrow night. Marco.

Oh Marco.. I took a short peek at Jhr.Elisa Ploos van Amstel. Is that a direct relative of you? He was at Java as the Japanese occupied Indonesia............ Just at the wrong time at the wrong place...

That period there, the Japanese occupiers ruthless - and the years after the Japanese left and the Republicans and the Dutch were fighting, was atrocious.

My mother in law just passed away. Before we were emptying their house and came across a lot of my father in law of that time and I watched a lot of documentaries on the subject the last weeks.

It was all just inhuman. Severe and disgusting violence was answered with violence, especially during the Bersiap period.

I think WT (WikiTree) should start a Project on that time at Java and the years after.

My father in law was send as a soldier in 1947 to Indie. A young man (I think 22 years old) from a little village. 2 years after WW-II ended at his country he was send with 99.000 others full of ideals to Indie.

He was lucky, as the drummer of the Grenadiers band was send home and he was asked to replace him. Leaving him out of the fightings. But he had to burry the death............

A lot of cruelty during the Japanese occupation, a lot of cruelty as the Indonesian wanted to become independent at both sites. I do not like politics, so I will not make a stand. But it was just a horrible time.

Sigh...........

Stay in peace all.

He was your grandfather right? I am so sorry Marco.
Another book my mother left me called Libertas ex Veritate, published in 1951 by Naamloze Vennootschap W.D. Meinema. The description on the title page says: Uitgave van de Organisatie van Reunisten der Societas Studiosorum Reformatorum ter herdenking van haar leden, omgelomen ten gevolge van de Japanse bezetting van het toenmalige Nederlands - Indie van Februari 1942 - Augustus 1945 . Which Google Translate gives as "Publication of the Organization of Reunists of the Societas Studiosorum Reformatorum to commemorate its members, killed as a result of the Japanese occupation of the then Dutch East Indies from February 1942 - August 1945. The book commemorates 31 different people including my grandfather Elisa Ploos van Amstel. Each has a short biographical sketch. My Mom left an English translation in longhand in the book and I should publish it some time on this website.

My grandmother and one of my uncles and one of my aunts were interned in a prison camp in Indonesia during the war and my aunt suffered from what is known as camp syndrome, a form of PTSD. It was indeed a horrible time.

Thanks for your comments and interest.

Thank you Marco.

I am moved by your story. Trying to find the book you re mentioning. So far no luck. Google just does not show it to me. But I will find it.

Came, during searching for anything on your grandfather, across this. http://www.archiefploosvanamstel.nl/index_bestanden/Page1027.html And Wikipedia has a page about the Societas Studiosorum Reformatorum in Dutch. Could not find it in English yet.

I see your grandfather is named in the website of "Oorlogsgraven Stichting" with also the image you added to the profile (wonderful) of your grandfathers grave and mentioned at the site "Red een Portret" (save a portrait). http://redeenportret.nl/portret/5ad38ec4-60b7-11e2-a34c-003048976c14. Also at the "Erelijst van gevallenen 1940 - 1945" https://www.erelijst.nl/jhr-elisa--ploos-van-amstel

You also saw Joop offering help. :) He is one of our besties. So send him a private message (click on his name here below. It will bring you to his profile. At the right side of his profile find the header "Collaboration". Click the green words in the line "Private Messages: Send a private message to Joop. (Best for comments to Joop that need to be private.) from his page so you can be in personal contact in e-mail.

If you sent a message that way Joop will get your WikiTree email adress.

If you both need a female hand :D I will be around. I am sure we will be able to find lots about your family in online archives. Not sure we will be able to find much before 1500.............

Marco you have a grandfather and others to be proud on. And you have a story to tell! Please do!

Thank you for being here at WT.

Sweet regards from The Netherlands, A.

Astrid, thank you for your kind comments. Before I joined Wikipedia and started tracking my family tree here, I started it as a project at my personal website. That site has many additional photos of the family as well as both the den Ouden and Ploos Van Amstel coat of arms. There is a page on my grandfather which includes the piece my mother wrote for a Canadian book about the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies. My personal website genealogy page is here: http://marcodenouden.com/familytree.htm One terrific find I came across when my mother passed away was a jewelry box with a collection of letters from my grandfather and grandmother to her while they were in Indonesia and she was in a boarding school in Holland. http://marcodenouden.com/familytree/letters.htm My mother never forgot her father and his cruel death haunted her all her days.

Hi Marco,

Thanks for your question, I would like to help you, just like Astrid,

In the first place I see little to no sources in your family tree on WikiTree. From the present to the farthest ancestors, it is important to support the information with reliable sources. The first 100 years, up to around 1900, are sufficient with 1st and 2nd hand information. Before that you can best support the facts with official sources such as birth/baptismal, marriage, death certificates, etc. We can help you with this because many Dutch documents can be found online.

What to do.. I will start searching for sources from before 1900 and if I find them, place them in the corresponding profiles. We can post comments and questions in the comment box of the profile in question.

If you have documents in Dutch to translate or transcribe, upload an image of the document in the corresponding profile.

We, Astrid and I, are members of the Dutch Roots team who help WikiTree members with Dutch Roots find information. you are very welcome if you want to become a member of the Dutch Roots Project. We have many members with experience who want and can help you. Here is a link how you can become a member: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Netherlands

Met vriendelijke groet, Joop

Thanks Joop. I am only dabbling in my family tree and have not devoted a lot of time to it in a while, but may spend some more time now. I have a lot of side projects since I retired six years ago including several blogs. And I have gone back to university. So I am kept fairly busy.

The actual footnote I referred to in my original post which gives the family history of my Great Great Grandfather J.J.A. Ploos van Amstel reads as follows in Dutch. There are a few symbols before years that look like a cross and probably signifies either year of birth or death or maybe that the date is not exact and a rough guess. I have indicated these by the following "(Cross Symbol)"

18 April 1704, JACOBUS JOHANNES, geb. 19 Sept. 1751, JOHANNES JACOBUS, geb. 11 Juni 1798 en JOHANNES JACOBUS ASUERUS PLOOS VAN AMSTEL, geb. 2 Nov. 1835. Het familiewapen door Ds. P. v.

Images of the first three pages of the book have been uploaded in the J.J.A.

Hi group

In our Häring family there is a theory, that we could have early ancestors from Friesland, maybe around Leeuwarden. Indeed there were many Haringxma, Haring, Hering in this area. We have no paper trail evidence about this theory but are trying to get results via DNA testing. Does anybody know about movements to the South, especially Baden-Württemberg, where my branch comes from? Since 1914 we are citizens from Basel and therefore Swiss.

Kind regards and een gelukkig nieuwjaar André Häring
